The incident happened in Bankhead Road, Northallerton, at 10.34pm last Sunday (December 22).
A young person wearing all black clothing with their hood up approached a parked car from the direction of Valley Road.
They then damaged the car with a metal baseball bat.
Officers are particularly requesting members of the public to check their CCTV and ring doorbell footage in the area to help identify the suspect.
