Yorkshire Water has explained why the water level at Cod Beck Reservoir is so low.

Photos of the reservoir near Osmotherley have circulated this week showing the water line way below where it usually is at this time of year.

Several members of the public have commented that they have never sen the water supply so long.

Others have questioned whether the low levels will mean water shortages this winter.

But the reservoir is no longer used to supply water to homes and businesses.

Completed in 1953, it previously supplied water to the Northallerton and Thirsk area, however its water treatment plant closed in 2006 due to a determination in the water supply and it is now just a beauty spot.

Explaining the low waterline, a Yorkshire Water spokesperson said: “We’re currently managing our Cod Beck reservoir level slightly lower than normal to carry out proactive routine maintenance.”
