Major work to widen Tanton Bridge near Stokesley is under way despite the coronavirus outbreak causing delays.
North Yorkshire County Council is carrying out the work with the aim of reducing accidents and providing a safer crossing for pedestrians.
It involves widening the bridge to accommodate two-way traffic and creating a footpath at either side.
‘’The work at Tanton Bridge is coming along with the arch barrel nearing its completion,” said county councillor Bryn Griffiths, member for Stokesley.
“Unfortunately the coronavirus outbreak brought some problems, and work slowed for a number of weeks.
“There were times when the transporting of materials was delayed due to plant closures, and reduced staff numbers on site due to furloughing and social distancing restrictions.
“Work is now due to be complete by mid-July, but depending on how quickly restrictions are lifted we hope to recover some of the lost time.”
County Councillor Don Mackenzie, executive member for highways, added: “I’d like to thank our contractors for the great work that has been made already.
“The widening of the bridge is essential to improve safety and reduce the number of incidents. We apologise for any inconvenience the delay may cause, but this was inevitable during these unprecedented circumstances.
“Unfortunately there have been reports of cyclists and walkers cutting off the site gate locks to access the adjoining road. I’d like to remind anybody who does so that this is an offence, and we will take action.”
