A housing association has begun construction on a new £1 million road which will open the way for the building of almost 100 affordable homes on the outskirts of Thirsk.

Broadacres is currently applying to Hambleton District Council to build 97 new homes at the Sowerby Gateway site.

These properties will mark the end of the development at Sowerby.

Work on the new road, which is off the B1448 Topcliffe Road (near the Premier Inn) is now underway, with completion expected in February 2021.

Subject to planning permission being granted, Broadacres will then be able to start work on the new homes in the spring.

Of the 97 properties planned, 59 will be for affordable rent allocated to people with a connection to Sowerby and the surrounding area. 38 will be for shared ownership.

There will be a mixture of one, two, three and four-bedroom homes, including apartments, bungalows, and family homes. The total cost of the scheme is £12 million.

Broadacres’ Development Director Joy Whinnerah said: “Constructing a new road has always been a pre-requisite to building new homes, so we are pleased to have now started work on this important project.

“Subject to planning, we will then start on the new homes which will help to address the shortfall of affordable housing at Sowerby Gateway.

Broadacres new Chair, Helen Simpson said “By building a mixture of homes, we will provide opportunities for a wide range of people,  young people looking to rent or buy their first home, families seeking more space and older people wishing to downsize or because their mobility needs have changed.

“It all forms part of Broadacres’ vision to become the best rural housing association in the country.”
