Work starts on new Sowerby 3G pitch

The development of a £1.6m all-weather pitch in Sowerby, near Thirsk, is now underway.

This work signals the start of the next phase of Sowerby’s new sports village which is linked to the Sowerby Gateway development of 1,000 new homes, extra-care housing, retail, and employment sites.

The sports village, which is being delivered in phases, already features allotment gardens, grass football pitches and a 1km running track along with an access road and two car parks.

The full size all-weather 3G pitch, is being developed on the western side of the site and will include changing facilities, additional car parking and further landscape improvements.

It is being funded with £512,000 from the Football Foundation, housing developer contributions of £755,000 and £340,000 from Hambleton District Council.

“It’s great to see this work get started and with it, the promise of even more high-quality sports facilities to look forward to in the Hambleton district,” said council leader Councillor Mark Robson.

“The council continues to be committed to improving access to sports and leisure facilities for everyone to enjoy for many years to come and continuing to develop the Sowerby Sports Village will help us to do just that.

“I am very excited to see the 3G pitch being created and look forward to it being open for sport in August, just in time for the next football season.”
