Work on constructing Hambleton’s state-of-the-art crematorium is expected to begin in November.
The district council project will see the new multi million pound facility built on the edge of Thirsk.
The facility will feature an electric cremator to reduce emissions and the area’s carbon footprint.
Members of the authority’s full council yesterday gave the go ahead for a contractor to be appointed.
They were told that planning permission was granted in July and the final details of the land purchase are due to be completed soon.
“Our new crematorium will offer state of the art facilities combined with more traditional aspects,” said council leader, Councillor Mark Robson
“It will be an important local asset for the district – currently mourners have to travel at least 40 minutes to lay their loved ones to rest and often have to wait lengthy times to get a slot.
“Our new facility will be of a high quality design and offer visitors a cathartic experience.”
The facility – on a 21 acre site near Busby Stoop – is close to both the A1 and A19.
When completed it will include offices, a family room, waiting room, service area, flower court, café and wake facility, woodland for ash scattering, memorial gardens and meadows.
There will also be parking for 160 cars allowing it to cater for large funeral services.
