A band of knitters are set to decorate Northallerton with rainbow bunting and cycling shirts to celebrate the visit of the world road race championships this September.
But the groups – Barkers Knit and Natter and Romanby Knit and Stitch – are appealing for wool to help them achieve hundreds of yards of bunting.
They need white, red, blue, green, yellow and black yarn – remnants or full balls will be accepted at the drop off points at Northallerton Town Hall, the district council offices at Stone Cross, Northallerton and Northallerton Leisure Centre.
The UCI Road World Championships come to Yorkshire from September 21 – 29 with the men elite time trials setting off from Northallerton High Street on Wednesday 25.
Both the men and women elite road races come back through West Tanfield on the 28 and 29.
“We want Northallerton to be dressed in rainbow colours for the race and our knitting groups are going to help us do that,” said Councillor Bridget Fortune, portfolio holder for leisure.
Along with the plans already in place – for a best dressed shop window competition, flags and painted bikes – the town is going to put on a great display for the visiting cyclists and their followers.”
