The Wensleydale Railway is offering schools the chance to make an free educational visit to the line.
The visits will kelp KS! and KS” groups the chance to see what life was like on the Northallerton to Hawes branch line during the 1920s through hands-on experiential and enquiry-based workshops.
Students will learn about the history of the railway either through visits to the Grade II listed Station House at Leeming Bar or alternatively in the classroom with curriculum-led loan boxes and additional online material.
Rachael Roberts, from the Wensleydale Railway, said: “On-site visits will begin at Bedale where pupils will have the opportunity to dress-up in period costume before being whisked off by train to Leeming Bar where they will be greeted by the station master and his staff.
“Pupils will then explore what life was like in a busy country station in the bustling parcels office, ticket office and waiting room before gaining a fascinating look into how the station master and his wife lived in the mid 1920s in the parlour and kitchen.”
Visits last for approximately three hours and can run in the morning or early afternoon with activities to suit both KS1 and KS2 pupils.
The Wensleydale Railway is also offering a ‘left luggage’ loan box programme where pupils will learn more about the history of the railway and the local area through a collection of objects and activities, each supported by curriculum-focused lesson plans.
The Leeming Bar Station House Project has been supported and funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and National Lottery players.
This funding has allowed the Wensleydale Railway to offer school visits and loan boxes for free throughout the 2021/2022 school year.
This funding has also enabled the restoration of the Grade II Station House at Leeming Bar which has secured its future for generations to come.
