A special parkrun is being held in Northallerton this year – on Christmas Day morning.
Parkruns are free, 5K events which take place in hundreds of areas of open space around the UK every Saturday morning. You can walk, run or volunteer in the events, with the emphasis on regular participation rather than performance. Most events start and finish near a local café, with participants encouraged to meet up after the event to socialise.
In Northallerton the free events take place on the field adjacent to Northallerton Leisure Centre every weekend. But this year a special, additional run will be held on Christmas Day at 9am.
It is hoped the run will help people overcome feelings of loneliness at this time of year.
“Some people can struggle with loneliness at this time of year,” said Sarah Stringer – parkrun event director.
“Our parkruns are very friendly and welcoming and we would love to welcome new runners and volunteers who are looking to fill their time as well as our regulars.”
There will also be a 2K junior parkrun on New Year’s Day at 10am. Both runs will be taking place next to the leisure centre, as usual.
“Parkrun has been fantastically well supported since day one,” said David Earl, Hambleton District Council’s development officer for health and wellbeing.
“In addition to the runners, there is a wonderful dedicated team of volunteers who work tirelessly, not only on the day, but each week on the build-up to the run. Without them the parkrun wouldn’t be as successful as it is now.
“It’s an amazing gesture for the team to dedicate their Christmas Day and New Year’s Day mornings to enable the runs to happen.”
The regular parkruns takes place each Saturday for adults and Sunday for juniors on the fields around Northallerton Leisure Centre. The runs start at 9am with a pre run briefing just beforehand.
