An appeal has been issued for volunteers to help with a new Wensleydale Railway heritage scheme.
The heritage education project at Leeming Bar Station House aims to give visitors a taste of how life in the station was like 100 years ago.
Wensleydale Railway has received funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund to open up the restored Station House, which will be presented as it would have been in the 1920s.
Costumed volunteers will bring the story to life by showcasing the working rooms of the Station House, including the ticket office, kitchen, station master’s parlour, waiting room, post office room and wash house.
Carrie Scott Hall, Wensleydale Railway volunteer coordinator, said there were a number of opportunities for anyone aged 14 and over to use the skills and experience they already had, and gain new skills and valuable work experience.
Carrie added that the project was about much more than trains.
“It’s about a whole community and way of life in the more optimistic era of the 1920s.
“From how people lived, what they wore and what they ate, to what jobs they did, how they spent their time and how they helped build both their country and their lives in the aftermath of the First World War.
“Our project is about being able to recreate a slice of rural life so that our visitors can get a tangible living heritage experience, and to do that, we need lots of different people with different ideas, skills and creative abilities to show what the Leeming Bar village community was like in 1925.”
The Station House will be open to everyone, including families and day trippers, school groups and local community groups.
The charity is looking for volunteers for a range of different roles.
These include researchers, administrators, tour guides, ticket sellers, arts and crafts people, volunteers with digital media skills and people to work in the tea room and shop.
