Plans to regenerate Northallerton’s town square are up for public debate.

Local residents and businesses – and visitors – are being asked for their views on a scheme which will redevelop the area around the Town Hall to create an open air events space and a leisure area.

It is part of a £19.3m scheme to transform the town centre – which is bidding for cash from the government’s Future High Streets Fund.

The Hambleton District Council scheme will move the town away from its reliance on existing retail trade by creating a better night time economy along with more cultural and leisure opportunities.

“The town square scheme will refresh and extend the existing space opening up the heart of the market town for more opportunities,” said council leader, Councillor Mark Robson.

“It will be a space that people can enjoy and builds on the recent improvements we have made to Zetland Street and Central Arcade.”

The proposals include the creation of a larger market square by the removal of some parking spaces; improved setting of the Market Cross; tree planting; improved seating and lighting and new high quality paving.

The scheme will be match funded by the District Council and the York and North Yorkshire Local Enterprise Partnership.
