Pupils from Thirsk’s newest primary school Keeble Gateway Academy have reached out into their local community.
The schools took part in their first Share Stories session with residents from extra care housing community, Orchid House.
Twelve children from Robins class at Keeble Gateway Academy, the school’s reception year, visited residents on site in the communal area at Orchid House to meet their neighbours, to talk and to read with them.
Hannah Burrell, assistant headteacher at Keeble Gateway Academy set up the initiative to help develop the children’s understanding of the importance of community.
She said: “One of our important school values at Keeble is kindness, and I believe that allowing our children to make links with our neighbours at Orchid House is a positive experience which reaches across generations.
“Our school outreach project aims to develop the children’s confidence as they establish relationships with interesting members of our local community who have lots of stories to share which the children can learn from.”
The visits will take place once a month allowing the children to make lasting connections with the residents.
