North Yorkshire Police is appealing for witnesses and information in relation to the attempted robbery which happened at about 11.40am on Wednesday.
The elderly victim was asked for the time by the suspect who the grabbed hold of his watch and tried to take it by using force.
The suspect them fled the area.
The suspect is described as white man, 5ft 9in to 6ft 3in.
He was approximately 50 to 60 years old and was wearing a jacket that looked as though it was waterproof.
Officers are urging members of the public to contact them with any information that could assist the investigation.
Police particularly want to hear from anyone who was in the area at the time, or who has CCTV or dash cam footage of the incident that shows the person described in the immediate area about Long Street.
