Temporary repairs to the footpath connecting St James Green with Marage Road in Thirsk will enable it to reopen next month.
North Yorkshire County Council closed the public right of way in May after reports of cracks and movement of the pavement.
An underwater survey together with detailed inspections have been carried out following the removal of vegetation along the route.
This has revealed that the retaining wall has been severely affected by river erosion, damaging and reducing the structural integrity of the footpath leading to the iron footbridge.
The Countryside Access Service has established a temporary solution which will involve excavating the path around the bridge and picnic area, backfilling with concrete and levelling it up with tarmac.
Large cracks further along the path will also be filled with concrete and patched to allow the route to be opened.
County Councillor Gareth Dadd, local member for Thirsk, said: “I’m delighted that temporary repairs can be carried out on the footpath as its closure is proving a great inconvenience for many people, however, public safety is our number one priority.
“We are under no illusion of the complexity of the project so it will take time to establish the most cost-effective and long-term solution.”
A contractor is due to be appointed in the coming weeks and it is hoped the path can be reopened by Christmas.
