Story of Northallerton’s former prison told in exhibition

The 270 year history of Northallerton’s former prison is being told in a new exhibition.

Historic finds uncovered during two archaeological digs at the site are currently on display in Northallerton Library.

On Wednesday, October 31, members of the archaeology team who had explored the 3.4 acre site talked local people through the artefacts found.

Two officers from York Archaeological Trust (YAT) were on hand in the reference library gallery to explain more about their work and what they discovered.

The exhibition has been supported by Hambleton District Council joining forces with North Yorkshire County Council for the Family Learning Festival 2018.

The Ministry of Justice closed the prison in 2013 and Hambleton District Council bought the site three years ago.

It is now being developed in partnership with Wykeland of Hull as part of the Central Northallerton Development Company and proposals for the site include retail and business units, restaurants, a cinema and public open space.

The exhibition runs until November 17.

Library opening times are available online at northyorks.gov.uk/northallertonlibrary.
