Sowerby man jailed for assaulting woman and threatening to burn down her house

A Sowerby man has been jailed for assaulting a woman and threatening to burn down her house.

James Murfitt, 26, of Kings Meadow, Sowerby, near Thirsk, pleaded guilty to the charges when he appeared before magistrates in York on Monday.

As well as admitting assaulting the woman at an address in Sowerby on Saturday he admitted threatening to burn down her house.

The defendant also pleaded guilty possessing cocaine at Harrogate Police Station on April 16.

He also admitted breaching a community order by failing to attend unpaid work appointments he was ordered to do for a separate offence of assaulting a police order.

Murfitt was sentenced to six months in prison and ordered to pay compensation of £200.

He was also issued with a restraining order not to contact the victim.
