Crakehall Primary School is using a £200 grant from Broadacres Housing Association to provide scooters for pupils to use during break-times as part of new project to get children active.
“We are providing a number of different outdoor activity pods set up in the playground to keep children moving and engaged during break,” said Claire Glover, grants secretary of Friends of Crakehall School.
“It’s like having a re-set, the children come back after the break better focussed and ready to learn.”
Crakehall School has seen its numbers grow in recent years and with over one hundred pupils is always looking to find new ways to keep everyone engaged.
Claire says research has shown that traditional games can still be the best way to get children up and moving and now scooters will be available alongside bikes, ball games and other activities.
“As a society, since the pandemic we have become very indoor, screen-focused with iPads, tablets and mobile phones,” said Claire.
“It’s very important to ensure children get used to enjoying the outdoors from an early age, not only for the obvious physical benefits but also the boost to mental health that fresh air, communication and releasing all that energy can bring.”
The Broadacres community development fund supports local organisations, groups, and projects in areas where Broadacres has homes.
The association’s own residents approve all grants.
