Romanby WI Scarecrow Festival opens for entries

The second prize-winning scarecrow entry at the 2019 event

Romanby WI Scarecrow Festival is now open for entries.

In previous years the festival has attracted around 100 scarecrow entries from families and businesses in the area, enjoyed by 2,000 visitors to the festival itself.

The homemade scarecrows decorate the village of Romanby on October 23 and 24.

Residents’ creativity is put to the test as the competition is tough.

Entrants have their eye on the top prize of £100 in cash/

The festival is now open for entries before a deadline of Sunday, October 3.

Event organiser and Romanby WI vice president, Samantha Jennings, said: “People make a donation of £10 to enter the festival, then they must make and build their scarecrow.

“They can really use their imagination, there’s no theme. We’ve seen giants, witches, characters from story books and films, even minions, and celebrities in previous years.

“It is really amazing what people come up with! Each entrant is given a number and a mark on the trail map.

“Over the weekend of the event members of the public can buy a map of the scarecrow trail area for £1, showing the location of every single scarecrow and its number.

“Each map has a voting slip, so members of the public can vote for their favourite by number.

“The most popular three will win cash prizes of £100, £50 and £25. Plus, a knitted scarecrow to keep as a memento.

“It’s great fun and a really good fund-raising event. We created the voting system mostly because it would be too hard for us to pick a winner!”

“Running and maintaining the WI Hall is no small task, there’s always a need to plan for the future, especially on a timber building.”

This popular event has a reputation for its sense of community spirit, fuelled by WI tea and cake of course.

Money raised at the event will be used for the ongoing maintenance of Romanby WI Hall, an 80-year-old timber building at the heart of the village.

The festival itself will feature entertainments alongside the scarecrow trail including a miniature ride on railway, a visiting fire engine, stalls and food vendors.

Anyone interested in taking part in the event, or entering a scarecrow to the competition can contact Romanby WI on Facebook or romanbywi@gmail.com for an entry form.

The event is supported by Broadacres Community Fund.
