Rishi Sunak to become next Chancellor of the Exchequer

Richmond MP Rishi Sunak is to become the next Chancellor of the Exchequer — the second-highest job in the Government behind the Prime Minister.

He will replace Sajid Javid who has reportedly resigned following rows with Boris Johnson and his most senior adviser Dominic Cummings over special advisers.

Sunak was previously Chief Secretary of the Treasury.

At 39 he becomes the second youngest chancellor in modern British history after George Osborne who was 38 when he took on the role in 2010.

Sunak has been has been the MP for Richmond (Yorks) since the 2015 general election.

As part of a major reshuffle of his Cabinet the Prime Minister removed Andrea Leadsom, Esther McVey and Theresa Villiers following face-to-face meetings with them in his parliamentary office this morning.

He also got rid of Attorney General Geoffrey Cox and Northern Ireland Secretary Julian Smith as he made space to promote new Tory MPs.
