Rishi Sunak has praised the new landlords of a Northallerton pub for keeping it at the heart of the community.

Mr Sunak called into the Oddfellows Arms to meet new landlords Matt Burke, his wife Laura, and David Young, to hear about their plan to maintain it as a popular community local.

While Matt has been managing the venue for the past year, the team have now formally taken on the lease, securing its future under new management.

Their plans include investment in new facilities such as a pool table and dart board, continued support for local sports teams, and expanding the pub’s programme of social events.

During his visit, the Richmond and Northallerton MP spent time with regular patrons who have supported the pub and heard first-hand how venues like The Oddfellows serve as important social hubs.

Customers spoke about the strong sense of community at the pub and the efforts made by Matt, Laura, and David to ensure it remains a welcoming and vibrant space for all.

Mr Sunak said: “It was fantastic to meet Matt, Laura, and David and hear about their plans for The Oddfellows Arms. I also enjoyed chatting to customers who value the pub as a central part of the community.

“Pubs like this provide more than just a place to socialise; they strengthen local connections and play an important role in bringing people together.”

David Young said: “It was great to have Rishi in and show him what we’re all about. This pub means a lot to people round here. It’s not just a place for a pint, it’s where people catch up, look out for each other, and have a laugh”.

“We’ve had brilliant support from the regulars, and we just want to keep that going. We’re not trying to change what makes The Oddfellows special, just build on it and keep it a proper community pub.”
