Rishi Sunak has announced he intends to contest the Conservative leadership election and bid to become the next Prime Minister.

The Richmond MP announced his decision on twitter.

Mr Sunak said he wanted to “restore trust, rebuild the economy and reunite the country”.

He added: “Someone has to grip this moment and make the right decisions.”

The MP resigned as Chancellor on Tuesday helping to trigger a mass-walkout which led to Prime Minister Boris Johnson’s standing down yesterday.

Mr Sunak was first elected to the Richmond seat in 2015.
