A retired engineer is to stand as a Save the Friarage Hospital Campaign candidate at the general election.
Nick Jardine, 61, lives in Great Smeaton, near Northallerton.
Nick said: “I am delighted to be able to stand in such a wonderful area of Yorkshire and is committed to bringing a logical and common-sense approach back to Politics”.
The candidate grew up in the Wakefield area where he ran a successful engineering consultancy for nearly 30 years.
During this period, he worked across the UK and internationally in Africa, Asia and the Middle East.
He moved to Great Smeaton near Northallerton 15 years ago when he met his wife Kim.
Unfortunately, Nick lost his wife to cancer earlier this year and the candidate says that the considerable time spent with her in the region’s hospitals has given him a clear insight into some of the problems facing the NHS.
He said: “I am determined to fight hard to ensure that the consultation exercise currently being undertaken on the Friarage Hospital results in the widest possible level of services being maintained there.
“In particular I will seek to open up a review on the provision of full A&E facilities”.
Holly Wilkinson, of the Save the Friarage campaign group, said: “Whilst the campaign group remains apolitical and welcomes the support it has received from other mainstream parties, we are delighted that Nick has approached us and is willing to put the case for the Friarage Hospital in Northallerton at the very forefront of his election campaign.”
He has two daughters and two sons, and six grandchildren, and enjoys walking in the Moors and Dales
He has recently completed the Lyke Wake and Cleveland Way walks.
