Record breaking Thirsk rower speaks to Duchess of Cambridge

Jasmine Harrison talks to the Duchess of Cambridge about her record-breaking row.

Jasmine Harrison — the youngest woman to row solo across the Atlantic — has talked about the challenge with the Duchess of Cambridge.

Speaking on International Women’s Day, the Thirsk 21-year-old told Kate she hopes her achievement changes perspectives about what women can do.

Swimming teacher and part-time bartender Jasmine Harrison set off on her 3,000-mile (4,828km) challenge from La Gomera in the Canary Islands in December.

Last month, she docked in Antigua completing the journey in 70 days, three hours and 48 minutes.

In a video conversation with the Duchess, Jasmine said she hoped her efforts would shift perceptions for “people that think that something can’t be done, and it can be”.

She said: “I would like to change male perspectives on females.

“It’s not about women believing they can do something because we can, we kind of know that we can already.”

The Duchess of Cambridge praised the 21-year-old’s accomplishment .

She added: “If nothing else, it’s given a huge door opener to so many other young women with that idea (that) with determination, with bravery and confidence so much is really achievable, so a huge well done.”

The royal wished Jasmine a safe flight back and said she hoped “you enjoy seeing your doggies back in Yorkshire”.

Jasmine has raised more than £19,000 for charities ShelterBox and the Blue Marine Foundation by completing the challenge.
