High river levels have forced a delay in repair work to Morton-on-Swale Bridge.
The grade II listed bridge, on the A684 between Northallerton and Leeming Bar, has been struck by vehicles on several occasions in recent years, resulting in significant damage.
Repairs had been scheduled to begin on Monday next week, but due to the heavy rains of recent days they will now be delayed.
Cllr Don Mackenzie, executive member for access, said: “We were due to start work on Monday, but because of the high river level we will unfortunately have to postpone the work.
“A revised date for the start of the repairs will be announced as soon as is practical.”
The planned repairs follow a strike by a vehicle last year and were scheduled to involve four weeks of two-way traffic lights as well as three nights of complete closure to allow for resurfacing.
In addition to the bridge repair works, North Yorkshire County Council will be installing new signing and lining and a reduced speed limit, subject to satisfactory consultation, to try to reduce the likelihood of future bridge parapet strikes.
