A small group of talented women in and around Morton-on-Swale have turned their talents to fundraising for Hambleton FoodShare.

Morton Quilters Group is led by Ainderby Steeple artist and teacher Sandra Morgan.

Under normal circumstances the group would meet once a month for some social sewing making quilts by hand in Morton Village Hall.

The group normally hold an annual exhibition, at which a community quilt is raffled for charity.

This year meetings have been cancelled and with no exhibition to work towards it was feared no community quilt would be made.

The quilt is made in the traditional log cabin pattern symbolic of the home with the red square at the centre of each block symbolising the hearth at the heart.

However, the group were able to portion up blocks of the quilt to be sewn by each member in isolation.

Each block was then joined to create the whole quilt.

Mrs Morgan describes the motivation behind the design.

“During the first lockdown we were all reminded how important home is.

“And at the heart of the home is the hearth, providing warmth and light.

“Qualities we’ve all relied on during lockdown, and will need again this winter.

“The design of the quilt is a well-known log cabin pattern, each block made of scraps in hews of blue and brown, featuring a bright red square at its centre.

“Symbolic of the hearth at the heart of the home. This alongside the tradition of quilting to make use of scraps, reusing treasured fabrics, storing memories, creating a quilt to keep you warm, seemed like an appropriate metaphor now more than ever.”

This quilt is now being raffled online in aid of Hambleton Food Share.

Participants are asked to make a £5 donation online at https://hambletonfoodshare.enthuse.com/#!/

They should then email Morton Quilters at helenw@me.com with proof of their donation and their name and telephone number to be entered into the draw.

The draw will take place on Friday, December 4.

Alison Grainger, co-ordinator at Hambleton FoodShare, said: “We are so grateful to the makers of the quilt.

“Their time and energy has gone into making something really beautiful and meaningful. We hope it’ll inspire others and help us raise plenty of money to continue our work in the area.

“Hambleton FoodShare is a community partnership which provides emergency food parcels for people who are struggling to feed themselves and their families.

“The aim of the scheme is to provide a three-day emergency food parcel to people in temporary financial crisis. We would like to thank all the businesses and individuals who are supporting us during the current crisis, it is really amazing.

“If you are in need of support you can contact us online or call 07514 244158 and we will do all we can to help.”
