Primary school reaches final of national film competition

Kirkby Fleetham CE Primary School has made it through to the final of the national Smiley Charity Film Awards with a song about their play tree.

With fewer than 20 pupils, the school is one of the smallest schools in North Yorkshire.

However, this has not stopped the school performing and professionally recording an original song inspired by their play tree, a tree the pupils play in before and after school every day.

The song has made it through the first round of voting in the final of the awards, which celebrate the success of film in fundraising to increase exposure of charity films and to encourage donations for good causes.

There are two rounds of judging in the final, which are judged by members of the British Film Institute, broadcasters and others.

The children’s song Watch Us Grow was written by deputy headteacher Kirsti-Anna Hume.

Its lyrics aim to echo the hopes and dreams of the children who play in the tree before and after school every day.

Year five student Rollo Sinclair said:“People have just loved the song, it always makes school visitors cry.

“We believe in ourselves and we love that people we haven’t even met before are supporting us too.”

Voting is open until 10 March 10
