Thirsk Racecourse.

Racing at Thirsk continues this week as the track hosts a six-race card on Friday afternoon for its Circus Family Day.

Racing gets underway at 2.10 with a two-year-old nursery contest before rounding off at 4.40 as 11 runners take on the classified stakes in class six.

The opening contest on the Thirsk card sees 11 runners take to the track for the seven furlong nursery race (2.10) where the two-year-old’s take centre stage. Harmonia is taken to follow up her first win at Catterick just over a fortnight ago here, having won by three lengths from the re-opposing Sheilas Well, who is likely to provide the main danger once again.

Mae Amor looks the one to beat in race two of the afternoon (2.40), a third on debut before following up with a fourth at York when pitched into deeper waters than this race. Neytiri Te Tskaha was sixth in a novice race at this track last month and looked in need of the experience but with that under his belt, is now expected to improve and be right up there in this five furlong sprint in class four.

A decent field of 13 runners tackle the six furlong handicap in class to mark race three on the Thirsk card at 3.10. Novello Lad, trained by Paul Midgely, justified a heavy odds-on price to score in a Doncaster contest last time out and is expected to go well again here and follow up. Of his rivals, Highland Olly can fill the second spit off the back of a decent third at Ayr last time out over this distance.

Race four on the card is the five furlong Northallerton Handicap in class four for three-year-old’s and upwards (3.40) with £5,234 heading the way of the winner in prize money. The form pick here is Strong Johnson, who shaped encouragingly over a longer trip at Thirsk last month before a flop at York but a line can be drawn through that run. Course and distance winner Abate has dropped to handy make and can make his presence felt, while recent Lingfield and Windsor scorer Law Of Average cannot be ruled out either despite an 8lb hike in the weights.

The penultimate race of the afternoon is one for the stayers as eight runners head to the stalls for the one mile and four furlong handicap in class three (4.10). The Marcus Tregoning-trained Quietness is back up in trip having finished a clear second at Sandown last time out to back up three straight wins since joining his new yard. Optician looks to be the main danger here with three wins from seven outings this season and a third in a Pontefract handicap last time out three weeks ago.

Finally, the Thirsk card comes to a close with the classified stakes for apprentice jockeys over the six furlong distance in class six (4.40). Calafrio is in good form for trainer Philip Kirby with two seconds and a fourth in her last three runs and should be there or thereabouts once again on Friday. She can take the win ahead of Flavius Titus, on a run of two wins (one a dead-heat) heading to Thirsk.
