Photographs taken by the fire service show the extent of the damage caused by a fire at a farm in Carthorpe, near Bedale, this week.

The incident happened on Monday night with around 40 firefighters battling the blaze through the night.

Crews used two high volume pumps (HVP) to tackle the barn fire.

There are two HVP’s in the county, one based at Richmond and another at Harrogate.

The HVP can be used for supplying the fire ground large quantities of water over a vast distance. Each HVP carries 3km of 150mm hose. The hose on a fire engine is 64mm.

A spokesperson for Richmond Fire Station said: “Once the HVP was set up and supplying water to the fire ground, the incident was able to go from eight pumps in attendance, down to three, thanks to the pumping capacity of the HVP.

“Due to the size of the farm with approximately 600 tonne of straw affected by the fire and the weather warning of strong winds from tomorrow lunch time, the HVP is going to remain in situ for a couple of days monitoring the fire.

“We were relieved to hear of no livestock losses in the fire.”
