Northallerton Scouts and Guides benefit from grant schee

A grant has allowed Northallerton Scouts and Guides to install five raised bed planters.

The new additions will help brighten up the entrance to the group’s recently opened new headquarters near County Hall on Boroughbridge Road.

The grant was provided by housing association Broadacres.

“The planter beds enable us to show young people how easy it is to grow your own food and it’s something they can then also develop at home,” said guide leader Dot Salmon.

“It will also lead to discussion about cooking food and the importance of supporting locally grown produce.”

The Scouts and Guides have been in Northallerton for over a century and now have different sections for children aged 5-18.

Starting with Beavers and Rainbows right up to Rangers and Explorer Scouts, Scouting and Guiding aims to help young people learn skills, grow in confidence, make lifelong friendships, and help their communities while they have lots of fun.

“Rather than specialising, it’s a chance for young people to try out a wide range of activities both indoors and outdoors to see what they like and to keep fit and active whilst doing it,” said Dot.

The Scouts and Guides received funding from Broadacres Sustainability Fund, which was established using a rebate the association receives each year from one of its suppliers, Jewson.

Helen Ball, Broadacres’ sustainability manager, said: “We were pleased to support an initiative which encourages young people to get outside, learn gardening and make a positive contribution to the local community. It’s a perfect example of why the Sustainability Fund was set up.”

The Sustainability Fund provides funding of up to £500 (£1,000 in exceptional cases) for local projects.
