Northallerton Rugby Club will use a £500 grant from Broadacres Housing Association to cover subscription fees and match kit for vulnerable and disadvantaged children.
“We’ve always kept our fees low but with the inflation and the cost-of-living crisis they have had to rise to £70 a year to ensure the club remains viable,” said club vice-chair and safeguarding officer Sam Holmes.
“That is still low compared to other sports however it can really add up if you have three siblings at the club or a low-income family and we don’t want anyone to miss out on sport because of financial reasons.”
As well as helping families facing financial hardship, the grant will also ensure refugees fleeing conflict who are staying with families in North Yorkshire can enjoy sport, as well as children with Special Educational Needs (SEN).
With hundreds of new houses being built near the club’s Brompton Lodge base, there has been an increase in new members and Northallerton RUFC now offers junior teams for boys and girls aged 8-16 plus an introductory mini -section for those even younger.
There are two adult male teams as well as a girls’ pathway leading to a women’s team.
“The café and bar help cover the club running costs but we rely on fundraising and donations for kit and equipment so this grant from Broadacres is very welcome,” said Sam.
Training is on a Thursday evening and every Sunday morning 10.30am-11.30am. Anyone interested in joining is welcome to turn up or get in touch via the club’s social media.
