Northallerton High Street is set to re-open to traffic on market days.
The temporary order which has closed the road on Wednesdays and Saturdays for the last 15 months – ends on September 29.
Officials say the closure was introduced to enable the Hambleton District Council run market to continue to operate safely under social distancing measures in place due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
Those restrictions have now been relaxed and all restrictions were removed in August.
Traders have been informed of the changes and moved back to their positions closer to the kerbside.
“With restrictions now removed we feel it is the right time to return Northallerton’s High Street to normal on market days,” said district council director of leisure and communities, Steve Lister.
“We appreciate that some people would prefer to see the road closure as a permanent feature on market days but we have to consider the traffic flow around the rest of the town which affects other businesses, residents and commuters.”
Jayne Charlton, North Yorkshire County Council highways area manager, added: “We believe it is the right time to cease the closure, as over recent months traffic levels have been increasing back to the same levels prior to the pandemic which is resulting in significant congestion in other parts of the town.
“In addition, extensive utility works will take place on Boroughbridge Road during October, requiring a closure and one-way system.”
