A initiative which provides skills-based activities for people suffering from mental health problems has been re-launched.
The Skill Mill, based at Northdale Horticulture, in Yafforth Road, Northallerton, is offering places to people recovering from mental health illness.
Clients can take part in a wide range of activities that include, woodwork, upholstery, ceramics, soft furnishing, arts and crafts and horticulture.
The relaunch and open day was attended by Rishi Sunak MP who spoke of the importance of community mental health support services and the investment the Government was putting into the treatment of mental illness.
He praised the work of Northdale Horticulture in setting up and hosting the Skill Mill service.
He said: “With the welcome emphasis on providing treatment for mental illness in the community, services like the Skill Mill are just what is required to help people get back on their feet in a supportive environment.”
Simon Cross, manager of Northdale Horticulture, who works with Jan Dick, manager of the Skill Mill, to provide the service said the team worked with clients to find the appropriate activity for their skill and confidence level.
“We always ensure that whatever an individual’s ability they can always make a meaningful contribution.” He added: “We help them to become socially active again and to re-engage positively with their local community.”
People with mental health issues from Hambleton and Richmondshire can be referred to the service by their GP, the community mental health team or another health professional. They can also approach the centre direct on 01609 770269 to discuss their circumstances or book a free one-day trial.
The cost of attending the Skill Mill is met from an individual’s personal health budget.
