North Yorkshire councillors recognised in Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours

Two North Yorkshire councillors have spoken of their delight at being recognised in Rishi Sunak’s resignation honours.

North Yorkshire Council division member for the Upper Dales, Yvonne Peacock, has received an MBE for her political and public service.

The long-serving Conservative councillor is a current member of the Yorkshire Dales National Park Authority, a former leader of Richmondshire District Council and a former councillor on North Yorkshire County Council.

Cllr Peacock said she was “speechless” when she received the call telling her of the award.

“It is nice to think that all the work over the years has been recognised in this way, but it is recognition for the Upper Dales really.

“I just couldn’t believe it when I was told — I’m very honoured.”

Great Ayton councillor, Ronald Kirk, also received an MBE for his political and public service.

The current treasurer of Richmond Conservative Association was chair of the group when Mr Sunak was selected to be the Conservative candidate for the constituency when former MP William Hague stood down.

He is also a former deputy leader of Hambleton District Council and has been a councillor on Great Ayton Council for more than 40 years.

Cllr Kirk said he received a telephone call from the former Prime Minister to say he was being nominated for the award.

“I’m delighted and honoured to have been recognised,” he said.

“It has obviously been challenging on occasion to have been involved in public service but hopefully I have done some good for the community over the years.”
