North Yorkshire NHS bosses are encouraging eligible people to come forward before the end of June for the spring Covid-19 vaccination.
People at increased risk from severe illness can get the vaccine, including those aged 75 or over, people with a weakened immune system or who live in an older adult care home.
Experts say recent data shows that cases of Covid-19 are increasing in most age groups, and there has also been an increase in hospitalisations.
They say the virus can still cause serious illness and be life-threatening for some people and that the vaccine provides protection against it and helps to reduce the risk of serious illness and hospitalisation.
According to NHS officials, last year’s spring vaccination programme showed that people who received a vaccine were around 50% less likely to be admitted to hospital with Covid-19 for three to four months after vaccination, compared to those who did not receive one.
Dr Nigel Wells, Executive Director of Clinical and Professional at NHS Humber and North Yorkshire Integrated Care Board (ICB), said: “This spring, the NHS is offering the Covid-19 vaccine to those that are at highest risk of getting seriously unwell if they catch the virus.
“Particularly for older people and those with a weakened immune system, Covid-19 can still be very dangerous. Over time immunity can fade, so it is vital that those who are at higher risk top up their protection.
“Getting vaccinated is quicker and more convenient than ever and I encourage anyone who is eligible to book their appointment as soon as possible.”
Spring vaccinations will be available until June 30.
Eligibility is similar to previous years, but those with a weakened immune system are now eligible from six months instead of five years.
Following advice from the Joint Committee on Vaccination and Immunisation (JCVI), this spring’s eligible cohorts include:
- Adults aged 75 years and over by 30 June 2024.
- Residents in care homes for older adults.
- Individuals aged six months and over who are immunosuppressed.
Anyone who is eligible can book a vaccine appointment via the NHS website or by calling 119 for free. People aged 16 and over can also use the NHS App to book an appointment.
Parents or carers can book a Covid-19 vaccination for children under 16 on their behalf.
More information and guidance about the vaccine is available on the NHS website.
