The newly-formed Thirsk Wombles group collected almost 100 bags of rubbish on their first outing.
Around 25 people took part in a litter-pick in the South Dowber Lane and Sutton Old Road area of town at the weekend.
In just a few hours, the newly-formed group had collected 87 sacks of pure litter, mostly from the woodland.
They also collected many other flytipped items, including a fridge, television, a net, an old bedstead, a mattress and more, bringing the total up to almost 100 bags of rubbish.
All items were left in two piles to be collected yesterday by Hambleton District Council.
Claire Hampson, from the group, said: “It was fantastic to see a good number of new volunteers of what looks to be a monthly event in and around Thirsk.
“Ages ranged from six to 78 and the community spirit was just incredible.
“Many residents also stopped various volunteers to thank them for all their hard work.
“New volunteers are always welcome.”
