New shawarma takeaway opens in Northallerton

Wesum and Ahmed in the new restaurant.

Two members of Northallerton’s Syrian community have set up a new business in the town.

Wesum Abo Swid and Ahmed Almousa have opened Shawarma House – a takeaway restaurant – in Friarage Street.

Both came to the town over the last five years under the UK Government’s official resettlement programme offering safety to those fleeing the crisis caused by the Syrian Civil War.

Mr Abo Swid and Mr Amousa previously worked in other takeaway businesses in the town before taking the premises previously occupied by Kam Bo House.

Mr Abo Swid has trained as a professional chef.

Mr Almousa trained as a tiler.

The business opened its doors on Monday.

It specialises in shawarma – a Middle Eastern dish consisting of meat cut into thin slices and stacked in an inverted cone which is roasted on a slow-turning spit.

The surface of the rotisserie meat is routinely shaved off once it cooks and is ready to be served. Shawarma is a popular street food throughout the Middle East.

Shawarma House is open seven days a week.
