New rural parish to be formed in Hambleton

A new parish will be formed in rural Hambleton in April as two becomes one.

The two parishes of Brafferton and Helperby near Easingwold will become Brafferton and Helperby Parish – and also create a new parish council.

The change comes as a result of a community governance review – which looks to make sure local governance reflects the interests and identities of the local community.

The review was carried out last year in response to a petition from local people which proposed that the parish of Brafferton and the parish of Helperby should merge to form a single new parish with a new parish council.

Hambleton District Council – which conducted the review – asked for views from local residents and stakeholders on whether the parishes should merge and if so what the parish should be called, the style of the parish, the number of parish councillors and warding arrangements.

There was a clear majority of consultees in support of the proposal which was granted district council approval in December.

The changes are:

  • Brafferton Parish and Helperby Parish will merge to form a new parish ‘Brafferton and Helperby Parish’
  • Brafferton Parish Council and Helperby Parish Council will be abolished and a new parish council will be formed ‘Brafferton and Helperby Parish Council’.
  • Brafferton and Helperby Parish Council will have seven elected parish councillors.
  • The election of the new parish councillors for Brafferton and Helperby Parish Council will take place on 2 May 2019.

A copy of the Reorganisation Order and detailed map is available for inspection online or by visiting Hambleton District Council’s offices at the Civic Centre in Northallerton or The Police Station in Easingwold.
