New restaurant opens in Northallerton

A new restaurant has opened its doors in Northallerton as part of an ongoing commitment to drive regeneration and investment across the county.

Modern Chinese restaurant Soju by Sumo has become the latest addition to the multi-million-pound Treadmills scheme created on the site of the town’s former prison.

Offering authentic flavours from across East Asia, the restaurant is hoped to provide local employment opportunities and further increase footfall to the site.

Owned by North Yorkshire Council, the multi-purpose Treadmills development has preserved all four listed buildings and already features an Everyman cinema, a number of retail units and a restaurant complex.

North Yorkshire Council’s executive member for open to business, Cllr Mark Crane, whose responsibilities include economic development and regeneration, said: “It is great to welcome this venue to the Treadmills site which continues to attract families and boost the local economy.

“It is important that we continue to attract new businesses to our town centres and high streets, and this new arrival at Treadmills is a great opportunity to increase footfall to a site that already offers excellent retail, business and leisure facilities.

“Our larger town centres such as Northallerton plays a key role in driving economic activity elsewhere across North Yorkshire, so this is good news for everyone.”

Soju by Sumo officially opened its doors earlier this month and offers a range of classic Chinese favourites. Owner Gary Chin said the restaurant has provided 15 local jobs and hopes it can encourage further investment to the site.

He said: “The early feedback that we’ve had from customers has been fantastic and it’s great to have opened the doors.

“We believe that we offer something completely new to the town, with our modern take on classic Chinese dishes, and we are excited about what the future may hold.

“We’re delighted to be part of the Treadmills scheme. It is a popular destination for residents and visitors, and the arrival of more and more businesses can only encourage further investment in the future.”

The new arrival is among a number of exciting developments at the Treadmills site planned for 2025.

A new customer access centre is set to open in the Campus Building later this year, with the central space replacing the location at Stone Cross on Rotary Way.

The centre aims to provide better access to customers, champion digital technology and has been designed to be inclusive and accessible.

Meanwhile, the day-to-day running of the 1852 Wing, which is council-owned and currently run by C4DI Northallerton, will be transferred to the authority from April 1.

The former main cell block and female wing were transformed into a centre for digital innovation in 2020, after being derelict since the closure of Northallerton Prison more than a decade ago.

Ten individual businesses currently occupy the C4DI Northallerton office space and the council are working to ensure the future arrangements for existing tenants, as well as attracting new enterprise to Northallerton.
