New Northallerton Aldi gets go-ahead

CGI of the planned development in Northallerton.

Plans for a new neighbourhood centre in Northallerton have been given the go-ahead.

Discount food retailer Aldi, in partnership with Eshton Group, applied for permission to develop the centre as part of the North Northallerton housing scheme.

The developers were granted final permissions for the scheme today.

The location on land to the east of Darlington Road and south of North Moor Road is described as a “gateway site” to the area.

Developers say “the design, layout and landscaping have been carefully planned, to create a positive first impression.

“The centre has been strategically positioned away from the existing roundabout, to create as much public open space as possible.”

The proposals would include:

  • Approximately 110 full and part-time jobs for local people
  • A combined investment of £8m
  • A new Aldi food store, to improve local retail choice
  • Starbucks coffee shop
  • Burger King restaurant
  • Greggs sandwich shop
  • A further retail unit

The developers claim the scheme has attracted a “significant” level of local support during the public consultation in November with more than 250 responses and over 76 per cent of respondents supported the proposals.

The application was unanimously approved by North Yorkshire councillors.
