A scout centre has kept its play area and camping field looking smart all summer thanks to council cash.
With the help of a grant of £2,000 from Hambleton District Council’s Making a Difference Fund, the Watson Scout Centre in Carlton in Cleveland, has replaced a worn-out lawn mower with an up-to-date mower which mulches the grass in addition to cutting it.
Over 1,200 young people use the activity centre each year for a residential experience.
It is available to not only cubs, scouts, brownies and girl guides, but is also used by local schools, boys brigades, local search and rescue groups, walking groups, and Duke of Edinburgh groups.
The centre which is run by a voluntary management committee provides 36 beds, communal lounge, dining room, kitchen, activity room, play area and a large camping field at the rear.
The play area is a very popular facility and the programme reflects this.
As an added bonus Paul Russell, of Russells Farm Machinery, has agreed to sponsor the scout centre for the next two years.
Councillor Mark Robson, leader of Hambleton District Council, said: “It may seem like a small thing but the new up to date mower has made a huge difference to the centre who were using out of date equipment which was more time consuming and not as effective.
“The new machine means the club can keep on top of the grass much easier making the space attractive for both visitors and regular users.
“This is a great example of how council cash can be fed back into the community it serves to make a direct and real difference however big or small.”
