New hospice benefits from grant

After years of hard work and fundraising, a new Hospice to serve the people of Hambleton and Richmondshire is beginning to provide its services – and a grant from a housing association is helping to fund new equipment.

Based in the 132-year-old former Lambert Memorial Hospital, Herriot Hospice Homecare’s Herriot Hospice@The Lambert is now awaiting final regulatory authorisation before its hospice services begin.

These include a six-bedroom inpatient unit and its range of outpatient services, including the hospice’s well-being service. Currently, the facility is providing bereavement support and a base for the charity’s existing and expanding hospice at-home service.

“Now we will also be able to deliver palliative and end-of-life care in a residential setting to local families in Thirsk which will be an enormous help to many patients and their families,” said Trust Fundraiser Gerri Griffiths.

The finishing touches include the provision of specialist equipment including syringe drivers and storage which have been purchased using a £500 grant from Broadacres.

“Syringe drivers are essential as they allow pain relief and medication to be administered to those who cannot swallow or have cognitive impairment,” said Gerri.

“We always look to make the patient as comfortable as possible, and the drivers ensure medication can be administered without having to disturb someone who is resting or asleep.”
