Ten people living with the condition multiple sclerosis having taken part in a trial of the toning suite at Northallerton Leisure Centre, which was part funded by a Communities Inspire grant from North Yorkshire County Council.

Members of the Hambleton and Richmondshire Group of The MS Society donated the membership costs for a six-week trial and those taking part were given a ‘welcome workout’ by staff to ensure that their individual needs were met.

At the end of the trial one customer said that before having MS she was very active and had used gyms regularly but since then she had felt intimidated and had lost all confidence in the gym.

Then she heard of the trial and thought it might be worthwhile giving it a try.

On the day of her first visit, Sarah Parker said she felt very anxious and almost didn’t go, but she was glad she had.

“The toning suite staff were very friendly and patient and showed me how to use the power assisted equipment and made adjustments to help me get the most out of them.

“I ached at first but then during the next few weeks I used the Toning Suite around twice a week and soon saw some improvement in the strength of my legs.”

Once the trial had finished Sarah made the decision to take out a toning suite membership.

“I am continuing to see the improvements,” she added.

“My legs are stronger to the point that I hardly ever use my stick anymore, the arthritis pain in my knees and neck has lessened and I can function more easily.

“I am getting out of the house and meeting people which has had a big impact on improving my mental health and making me feel less anxious. I have also started driving again – even driving myself to my appointments at James Cook hospital.

“Altogether I have lost over a stone in weight and 12 inches all over. I am grateful to the local group of the MS Society as I wouldn’t have come without their help.  I’m glad I made the effort to turn up on that first day.”

The toning suite at Northallerton Leisure Centre is aimed at people who are keen to exercise but find it challenging due to weight or mobility problems and includes a range of power-assisted machines which are designed for use by anyone, regardless of age, mobility, weight or fitness level.
