A programme of drainage improvements is to begin on Topcliffe Road in Thirsk to mitigate the risk of flooding following major growth in the town.
The work will start next Monday and take around 18 weeks to complete.
The road, which serves housing developments, businesses and schools, frequently suffers from surface water flooding.
North Yorkshire county councillor Dave Whitfield, who represents the Sowerby and Topcliffe division, said: “Thirsk has grown significantly in recent times and so it is inevitable that road use has too.
“Topcliffe Road is no exception and unfortunately parts of the drainage system are in imminent need of replacement.
“When undertaking this significant work safety is obviously a primary consideration therefore as much of the work as possible needs to be undertaken when the schools are on summer holidays.
“This is why the work will run from July until the autumn.
“Without doubt this will cause inconvenience to local people and we apologise for that and look forward to your support in making the drainage system fit for purpose.”
The improvements will begin on Monday, July 11, lasting for 18 weeks.
The majority of the work will be carried out under traffic light control, however some road closures will be necessary due to the nature of the work.
During school term-time the working hours will be from 9.30am to 3pm, and during school holidays from 7.30am to 5pm, Monday to Friday.
Advance warning signs are in place and on-site personnel will manage access to properties and businesses within closure areas. There may be times when access is not possible.
Parents or carers who are dropping off or collecting from Sowerby Community Primary Academy and Thirsk School & Sixth Form College are being asked to use alternative access via Green Lane East, Croft Heads and Gravel Hole Lane where possible.
