Middlesbrough men jailed for robbery of Northallerton ice cream parlour

48-year-old Graham Simms and 38-year-old Joseph Spencer.

Two Middlesbrough men have been jailed for the robbery of an ice cream parlour in Northallerton.

Graham Simms, 48, and 38-year-old Joseph Spencer were jailed for three years and three years and four months respectively for carrying out a robbery at the Dolcie Dessert Emporium in Northallerton.

The pair appeared at Teesside Crown Court yesterday.

The incident was reported just after 7pm on Sunday, August 4.

The tips jar and some perishable goods were taken in the incident.

Staff told how two of the men entered the shop swearing at staff and demanding they give them all of the “f**king money”.

A post put out by the store after the incident.

Owner Leshon Wallis said in a post on social media after the raid: “They began waving bags containing who knows what in my face and threatening to shoot if they didn’t get anything.

“All three men were white, just incredibly scruffy and stunk of dirty clothes, one of them having distinctive tattoos on his hands.

“The third man can be seen wearing a cap with tags still on, perhaps stolen so this was their intentions of the evening.

“They also smelled heavily of alcohol and were aggressive.”

Following enquiries with support from Cleveland Police and British Transport Police, three men from Middlesbrough were arrested in connection with the incident

The officer in the case, DC Quita Readman from Northallerton CID, said: “We worked very closely with Cleveland Police and British Transport Police to secure the arrests of the robbery suspects, Simms and Spencer.

“They thought they could brazenly travel in and out of our area to commit crime without being caught.

“The prison sentences handed out to them shows just how wrong they were.

“This outcome is a reflection of how seriously the incident was taken by the police forces involved and by the courts too.

“We will never tolerate criminal behaviour in our community and this case demonstrates the lengths we will go to seek justice for victims.”

A 42-year-old man was released without charge after the incident.
