Improvements planned for Hambleton village hall

Sandhutton and Breckenbrough village hall is set to benefit from improvement work thanks to a community fund linked to the development of the new Crematorium for Hambleton at Maple Park.

The funding will pay for the outdoor space to be enhanced and updated, improved disabled access and toilet provisions and the replacement of the existing lighting with new LED lights.

The community fund YOR4Good, supports economic regeneration and is funded by donations of cash or benefits from contractors when they are awarded contracts.  In this case, Willmott Dixon is the contractor who is currently developing the new Maple Park site which will feature the new Hambleton Crematorium on behalf of Hambleton District Council.

Councillor Mark Robson, Leader of Hambleton District Council said: “This is great news for the village of Sandhutton and everyone who uses this important community facility.

“I’m delighted that in developing the Crematorium we’ve also been able to bring some additional improvement to residents by enhancing this well used and much-loved village hall.

“I look forward to seeing the end result and hope the work going on means people can continue to benefit and enjoy this facility in the future.”

Andrew Hurcomb, Yorkshire director at Willmott Dixon, said: “This is such a rewarding project to be involved in and we’re proud to be able to help the volunteers continue to make a huge difference for local people and families.

“As a business, our purpose is to deliver brilliant buildings, transform lives, strengthen communities and enhance the environment so our world is fit for future generations.

“Thank you to all the team and our local supply chain partners who have given their time and resources to help upgrade such an important community space.”

Stan Brow from YOR4Good said: “We are proud that YOR4Good was the first social value initiative of its kind in the country.  We are delighted to support such a fantastic community initiative as the Sandhutton and Breckenbrough Village Hall refurbishment and hope it will continue to serve the local community for many years to come.”

A member of the village hall committee Tracey Ashton said: “This funding is most welcome and as a committee we are delighted it is being put to good use by upgrading, improving and enhancing this historic and important community building in Sandhutton.

“Sandhutton and Breckenbrough Village Hall was built in 1892 and was then the local school building with many residents having relatives who attended the school.

“The hall has been run by the current small group of volunteers since 2014 with the aim of having a positive impact on peoples’ lives and life chances by organising a variety of social, arts and skills-based events and hiring out the hall to residents from Sandhutton and surrounding villages.

“The work being done means local residents can continue to enjoy this vital facility, which really is at the heart of our community, for many years to come.”
