Hambleton residents warned over council tax scam

Council taxpayers across Hambleton are being warned to be on the alert for bogus phone calls and text messages.

The calls and text messages purport to be from gov.uk and inform them that they are entitled to a council tax refund as the council tax banding for their property has been reduced.

They are then referred to govgroup.net to complete a form giving their date of birth and bank details so the cash can be paid to them.

However the calls and messages are scams designed to glean personal details from innocent taxpayers.

“We want to advise all our council taxpayers to be on the alert for these scam calls and messages” said Louise Branford-White, director of dinance.

“These are not genuine and residents must not give out personal details – especially bank details – to unknown sources.

“Hambleton District Council would never ask for personal information via social media, however if you are contacted by phone the council officer will provide you with their name, department and extension number and if in doubt ring the main council number 01609 779977 and ask for the staff member by name.

“If you have been tricked into providing your bank details as a result of this scam then please contact your bank immediately and let them know.”

Anyone receiving scam calls or messages should report it to Action Fraud on 0300 1232040 or online at www.actionfraud.police.uk.

If you have been a victim of fraud then report it to North Yorkshire Police on 101.

If you have any concerns about fraud against the council then please contact the council’s fraud hotline, Veritau on 0800 9179 247.
