Hambleton council officers have caught several pubs in the district serving alcohol without a meal.
Hambleton District Council’s Environmental Health team has been carrying out spot checks on businesses throughout the district to offer support and guidance and make sure they are following the law.
Officers have specific powers available to them, including closing non-compliant businesses, serving enforcement notices and prosecuting repeat offenders.
But the council said compliance throughout the district had generally been very good with only a handful of legal notices served so far.
A common issue that was found however during the visits was businesses failing to make suitable arrangements for monitoring, supervising, and maintaining social distancing.
The council said there had also been several businesses serving alcohol that were not providing a main meal, or offering bar snacks and other foods that officers did not consider to be ‘substantial’.
Paul Staines, director of environment, said: “Our officers are out and about in the district to offer support, advice and guidance to businesses.
“By making sure they have measures in place to manage the risks of coronavirus, we can look after the health of our communities as well as supporting the local economy.
“We will take enforcement action against unscrupulous businesses.”
