Hambleton public toilets to get refurbishment

Hambleton District Council's former offices in Northallerton now used by North Yorkshire Council.

A £130,000 community grant to refurbish public toilets has been agreed this week.

The bounce back grant funding, aimed at helping towns recover from the Covid pandemic, will be split between three separate projects which will see the public toilets in Northallerton, Thirsk and Great Ayton undergo a refurbishment this year.

The Great Ayton work will get underway first in April, followed by Northallerton in May and Thirsk in October.

In Great Ayton, the toilets will be fully modernised to 2022 standards, in Northallerton, the project will focus on a ground floor, fully accessible toilet which will be open every day, and in Thirsk the toilets in Millgate car park will benefit from a full refurbishment.

Leader of the council, Councillor Mark Robson said: “Investing the bounce back funding in this way, will, I believe, be a much welcome decision.

“I know from feedback from the community, that offering clean, modern and accessible public toilets in our market towns is very important and ensures that our district continues to attract day visitors, shoppers and tourists as well as of course local people.

“As Leader, supporting our district’s economic recovery from the Covid crisis is one of my key aims, and I firmly believe this project will play a key part in ensuring our towns have all of the key facilities necessary to enjoy shopping, eating and drinking and leisure time in our district.”
