A Guisborough architectural firm is celebrating a prestigious award win for turning a group of listed farm buildings into a family home in a conservation area of the North York Moors National Park.
Summerhouse Architects have won the “Best Conversion” category of the North York Moors National Park Design Awards 2018 for their work on the Grade II listed Hall Farm Barns in Carlton-in-Cleveland.
The awards recognise “the most innovative and distinctive new developments completed within the North York Moors over the past five years”.
The firm said the challenge for a build of this type was to maintain the architectural character and integrity of the agricultural buildings and the cultural heritage of the farmhouse, while creating a beautiful and modern family home.
The architects achieved this by creating a new building linking to the existing barns and forming the heart of the home where the kitchen and family room are located.
The awards were presented at a ceremony in Helmsley earlier this month.
Suzie Mack, director at Summerhouse Architects, was very pleased that the project stood out.
“We are obviously delighted to have won the award for best conversion. It reflects not only ours, but the whole team’s efforts to create a really beautiful home for David and Sarah.”
David Marwood owns Hall Farm Barns, and his late wife, Sarah, who was diagnosed with cancer shortly before planning permission was granted in 2015, put her heart and soul into the project.
She focused on the interior design and gave very close attention to sourcing the most suitable materials and furnishings. David feels the architects interpreted Sarah’s vision well and is extremely satisfied with the outcome.
He is also very pleased that his home has been singled out for this accolade.
David said: “Converting the out-buildings into our family home has been a long-held dream.
“To receive this award from the North York Moors National Park, highlights how Summerhouse and the contractors were able to maintain the integrity of the buildings’ architectural character. Sarah passed away earlier this year and would have been very proud that our home has received this respected award.”
The project was a team effort and the work was carried out by Architects – Summerhouse Architects; Planning Consultants – Steve Hesmondhalgh & Assocs; Structural Engineers – Mason Clarke Associates; Main Contractor – Barry Shaw and Son Building Ltd; Groundworks – Barnfather Construction Ltd; Landscape Work – Wilkinsons Landscapes; Lighting Design – Brilliant Lighting.
