Growing running club welcomes 100th member

Hambleton Athletics & Running Club (HARC) is celebrating after their 100th member joined the club.

HARC was conceived in February 2020 and in July of that year, six friends sat in a garden for the very first committee meeting and the club was formed.

Since those Covid days when HARC offered a virtual running group to help keep people safe and supported during their exercise and then provided a buddying system once the rules allowed, the club has gone from strength to strength.

Four years on, HARC now has an 11-strong coaching team, a thriving social calendar, a 12-person committee, an ever-growing junior section, athletics training as well as running, and regular track nights.

The club has raised over £4,300 for local charities, and has recently become a Community Amateur Sports Club.

The HARC coaching team has delivered 12 Couch to 5k programmes, introducing (or reintroducing) 153 people to running. The club’s Tuesday and Thursday sessions regularly see over 30 people taking part, and a wave of blue HARC vests has become the norm at the start and finish lines of local events.

Club chair Gemma Wardle said: “It’s amazing to see how far HARC has come in such a short time.
“All this doesn’t just happen on its own though —it takes hard work behind the scenes and a commitment to our club principles.

“A huge thank you goes to our committee, volunteers, coaches and members – you all do your part to make the HARC family a friendly, welcoming and supportive place to be.”
